RED MOUNTAIN

Red Mountain

Red mountain is a great liitle mountain right off the road a mile from my house in Crowley Lake. It is 3200 vert and mostly north facing. We had gotten a little snow the past few days, and it was cold, for California that is. I had always driven by it, and it looked great. It reminded me a little of Taylor mountain on Teton Pass. My partner called in sick, so I decided to head up Red solo. I ran into 2 people heading up, so I joined them. The lower flanks looked pretty tracked, so I was a little hesitant. I hate tracks. As we climbed higher I realized that people were mostley skiing the lower pitch, and the upper bowls were untouched. SWEET!

The upper bowls of Red Mountain

We skinned up the main drainage and got onto a ridge seperating the bowls, and saw some great powder to be had.

The middle bowl Red Mountain

We arrived at the top and were greeted to some amazing views.

We decided to ski the right bowl, and dam was it good. It was smokey dry Teton smoke, about a foot of it. I couldn’t believe it. I was on my brand new skis too, Voile asylums, they performed well.

My tracks down the bowl

I skied Red Mountain two days in a row, and it was great. Nice to have such a great shot a mile down the road, with very little people. Man I love the high sierra.

first off. the white mountains are in NEW HAMPSHIRE. secondly, bravo friend. very nice turns!!!! as painful as it is for me to watch from the chair of my desk in providence, r.i. you definetely found something there. that east face of mt. morrison looks right imposing. reminds me of the western wall of thunder mountain in lone peak wilderness, utah. you know, the place where hypo, and other great lines are? anyway, thanks for the pictures. i love them.

Yeah, maybe, but these are 14,000 feet. They have great skiing, but they need a lot of snow to fill it to the desert floor. I would like to ski over there soon. I would love to see your new avi video, I really said that, skipping school? That is awesome!

oh buddy. and i quote “we’re looking at the tail end of a seven day storm cycle. Looks like I’ll be skipping class tomorrow!” great work. ill try to get you a copy of that footage. the 4 runner makes a debut as well. once i catalogue all of baldy’s old footage i will try to make a movie of some sort. we are missing some las lenas footage i dont think we will ever see again and that year in the bridgers was a low snow one. in other words, we probably need more footage to produce anything worthwhile. my buddy has a camera simialr to baldy’s and maybe i can start getting some footage from mt. washington valley.

Calling in sick is an option for our ski partners?

Jon, I guess it happens, who knew. Nuge, I would love to make it to rhody soon, I just don’t get back there as often as I used to. Maybe early summer, I might be back to get these painful screws out of my ankle, we’ll see.
