DEATH ON THE SOUTH TETON

Scary stuff,  I’m going there in a week. Freaks me out a little, I’ll definitely pull back the reins a  bit. That face is so exposed, the meat underneath you is huge. A 6 inch fracture let alone a 2 foot one could send you over those cliffs. I will be skiing very close to islands of safety next week.

Woke up this morning to the avy report giving condolences to family and friends of a skier getting slid off the south. Me and Jason were out on the East Hourglass at the same time the accident happened. The conditions were perfect in the Tetons, bluebird, no wind effected snow, only smooth pow. It was the first tour in Garnett this year for me after waiting for conditions to improve. Needless to say we were blessed with a great day and some were not. Unaware of the events that happened on the south I followed Brandy and his partner out from the Meadows to the parking lot. On our way out I heard two bombs and then a heli came out of avalanche canyon and circled around acouple of times and then flew away.

can i just tell you? i didnt think helis were allowed in national parks? my condolences to the victim’s family. may the victim r.i.p. condolences to the victim’s friends. this notion that helis will be forbidden from flying over park area boundaries until someone is reported dead inside boundary is b.s.. can i just tell you something? a no fly zone is a no fly zone.

be safe jon and calla. this one is a bad year even in the wasatch so keep your wits about you.

I don’t think it is a no fly zone. I’ve seen choppers up there shuttling ranger gear to and from the lower saddle. Search and rescue uses them whenever needed also. I don’t know the rules on choppers in N.P’S. It seems as though they are used when needed.

Thanks Guy, long time no talk, how is the family doing? I’ve been skiing and climbing for years, and finally decided to share the experiences with those interested. No Olympics for me, those ski racers are pretty amazing though.

    Hey Mike,
Dig the blog, great photos, looks like you picked a good year to be in the Sierra. Be careful in that sketchy continental snowpack. JV

i dont know what the chopper regulations in the n.p.s. are either but i know in all designated wilderness areas any motorized vehicle is completely and 100% forbidden. Jackson’s heli outfit is forbidden from flying in teton n.p.. either way did you here about c.r.? barely 4 years after young peterson landed on him after chucking about 45 ft, in brighton ski resort utah he dies? as phil hart once said “such a long long time to be gone and a short time to b here.” r.i.p. c.r.. ride
